Subsurface Stratigraphic Imaging and Geotechnical Characterization of a Heritage Structure in Baghdad Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical imaging technique used to provide information about subsurface conditions without damaging the subsurface. In this research, subsurface conditions and detecting buried anomalies will be investigated in an old heritage building currently suffering from structural defects. This building is located in Baghdad, Iraq, in a challenging environment characterized by saline groundwater and highly conductive soil. A Mala GPR system equipped with a 250 MHz antenna was used to perform a systematic grid scan, resulting in two-dimensional images of the subsurface layers. The collected data underwent further processing through gain adjustment, noise reduction, and bandwidth selection. Radar data processing revealed significant subsurface features, such as an anomaly at a depth of approximately 1.9 meters and a pipe, presumed to be approximately 0.3 meters in diameter, buried at a depth of 0.4 meters. Areas with weak signal responses were identified, indicating the presence of voids caused by moisture or localized subsurface degradation. The application of signal processing increased the signal-to-noise ratio by 14.4 dB, which improved the interpretation of the collected data, despite the limited penetration depth of approximately two meters due to the high salinity of the soil. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of ground-penetrating radar in the non-destructive assessment of heritage buildings
